The term ‘security’ refers to many different investments such as stocks, bonds, investment contracts, investment units, cheques, promissory notes and derivatives. For example, a security may represent ownership in a corporation in the form of stock, a payable relationship with a government agency or corporation in the form of a bond, or ownership rights in the form of an option.
Securities are fungible and tradable financial instruments used to raise capital in the public and private markets that entitle the holder to receive dividends.
